The modern Pentecostal and Charismatic movements emphasized baptism in the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, healing, renewal, and expressive worship, influencing Protestant, Catholic, and mainline churches.

From the 1960s, charismatic renewal influenced Catholic and mainline churches through prayer groups, healing prayer, praise music, and renewed teaching on spiritual gifts.
The Azusa Street Revival became a major symbol of modern Pentecostal beginnings.
Led by William J. Seymour in Los Angeles, the revival emphasized baptism in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, healing, interracial worship, and urgent mission. Earlier holiness and revival streams prepared the ground, but Azusa became the most famous center of global spread.
Figures such as Charles Parham, William J. Seymour, Aimee Semple McPherson, and Oral Roberts shaped Pentecostal and charismatic identity.
Parham helped popularize tongues as a sign associated with Spirit baptism. Seymour gave Azusa its missionary and interracial power. McPherson built a public evangelistic and media presence. Roberts helped connect healing evangelism, media, and later charismatic networks.
Pentecostal denominations and later charismatic networks became major global Christian forces.
Assemblies of God, Church of God in Christ, Foursquare Church, Vineyard, independent charismatic networks, and many non-denominational churches carried charismatic spirituality into global worship, mission, and church planting.
From the 1960s onward, charismatic spirituality entered Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, and other established churches.
Catholic Charismatic Renewal and mainline charismatic renewal brought prayer meetings, healing prayer, praise music, and teaching on spiritual gifts into older church structures. This created both renewal and controversy, especially around discernment, authority, and worship style.
