Why it matters
The Heidelberg Catechism is one of the warmest and most pastoral documents in the Protestant confessional tradition. It teaches doctrine through questions and answers that move from human misery to redemption in Christ and then to thankful obedience.
Its opening question on belonging to Christ has made it a classic of Protestant devotion as well as catechesis.
- - Organized around guilt, grace, and gratitude
- - Pastoral tone rather than merely polemical tone
