Huldrych Zwingli was a priest, preacher, and reformer in Zurich whose reform program developed alongside Luther's but took a distinct Swiss shape. He argued that worship and doctrine should be reformed according to Scripture, challenged late medieval devotional practices, and worked with Zurich's civic authorities to reshape church life. His disagreement with Luther over the Lord's Supper became one of the early dividing lines inside Protestantism. Zwingli's influence continued through the Swiss Reformed tradition, even though he died in battle in 1531 before the movement reached its mature confessional form.
